Best Pillows to Use for Neck Pain

January 21, 2022 by Dr. Todd Goldman

woman sleeping on pillowDo you often wake up with a stiff or sore neck? If so, the pillow you are using could be to blame.

According to Healthline, some two-thirds of people deal with neck pain. If you’re using a pillow that is too high or too low, pressure can build up as the neck tries to compensate for the lack of support. It is best to choose a pillow that helps support the neck and its natural curve. But how do you know which pillow is the right pillow for you? Read on for our advice on the best pillows for those suffering from neck pain.

How to Choose the Best Pillow for Neck Pain

When it comes to neck pain, it’s best to look for a foam or latex pillow. According to a study done in 2020, “both latex and memory foam provide support and help reduce neck fatigue.”

  • Firm Support Memory Foam Pillow
  • A great memory foam pillow option for those who are looking for firm support is the EPABO Memory Foam Pillow. What makes this pillow a great option is that it is contoured to provide ergonomic support that aligns your head, neck, shoulders, and back. Ergonomic pillows are designed to provide ample cervical support without elevating the head too much.

  • Customizable Latex Pillow
  • The Avocado Green Pillow is an organic pillow option made from organic latex and kapok. This pillow is a great choice for those looking for a customizable alternative. You have the option to add or remove stuffing until the pillow reaches the perfect comfort level for your neck.

  • Stomach Sleeper Memory Foam Pillow
  • If you are an avid stomach sleeper, choosing the right pillow is crucial for the correct support of your neck. The Belly Sleeper Pillow is designed to be especially thin and flat, which is ideal for those who like sleeping on their stomachs. The edges of the pillow are curved to help reduce head and neck rotation and to reduce pressure points that contribute to pain.

In Addition to Changing Your Pillow

If you changed your pillow to help with your neck pain, you are on the right track. However, there are other things you can do to find relief.

Be Mindful of Your Posture

It is recommended to be mindful of your overall posture when sitting and standing.

  • Keep a Neutral Spinal Position
  • You should modify your posture to ensure that your spine is in a neutral position with your shoulders hovering directly over your hips and your ears over your shoulders.

  • Take Breaks to Stretch
  • If you do a lot of computer work, drive long distances, or do other repetitive tasks that tax your neck, you should be sure to take breaks to stretch your neck every 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Heat and Ice Affected Areas
  • If you still cannot find relief, using heat or ice to ease the pain with a hot or cold compress can also help.
