According to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “In 2017, there were an estimated 2,775,608 police-reported motor vehicle crashes in which at least one passenger vehicle (i.e., a passenger car or a light truck) was towed from the crash scene in the United States, which resulted in an estimated 1,686,240 known passenger vehicle occupant injuries.”
The statistics are staggering. According to HuffPost, some of the top reasons for car crashes are:
- Distracted driving
- Reckless driving such as speeding, tailgating, and running red lights
- Inclement weather
- Driving drunk or on drugs
- Inexperienced drivers
- Design defects with the car
- Driver health related issues
- Night driving
Speaking of staggering statistics, “In 2010, the cost of medical care and productivity losses due to injuries from car accidents was more than $99 billion – nearly $500 for each licensed US driver”, according to SaferAmerica.

Dr. Todd Goldman’s Advice for Car Accident Injuries
When you first visit the office, the first thing we ask is if you’ve been to the hospital for a full evaluation to see whether you’ve sustained any serious injuries. Dr. Goldman, as he details in his book Taking Control, will almost always advise that this be the very first course of action, often sending you there immediately if you haven’t already gone.
Another piece of advice he gives patients is to advise your insurance company of the accident and if you begin feeling any aches and pains at all. He sees it all the time; you will feel fine right after the crash, but after a week or even a month later, painful symptoms arise. There is only a 30-day period to report an injury to the insurance company, so it’s best to do so as soon as possible. This way, if more significant issues arise later, they can be directly associated with the accident. Because it can take up to 30 days for swelling and nerve damage to be felt or become noticeable, Dr. Goldman will not even perform a nerve test until about the 30-day mark.
The first thing Dr. Goldman will do after you have been to the hospital is to perform a complete spinal examination, check for signs of a concussion, and try to ascertain if he needs to recommend any other specialty doctors.
