What is Chiropractic Adjustment?
According to the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), Chiropractic is a non-invasive, drugless form of health care. Over one million adjustments are given each day. In his book, “Taking Control” which is available at our office in Medford, our doctor, Todd Goldman, DC also quotes ICA saying that adjustment “is characterized by a specific thrust to the vertebra utilizing parts of the vertebra and contiguous structure as levers to directionally correct articular malposition.”
There are several reasons why you would seek chiropractic adjustment including:
- Back, shoulder arm, leg and neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches
- Sciatica
- Injuries from car accidents and sports injuries
- Nerve disorders
- Bursitis and tendonitis
- Arthritis
What to Expect from Your Adjustment
Every doctor has different methods and techniques when it comes to chiropractic manipulation and adjustment. Among the techniques Dr. Goldman commonly uses are impulse activator methods, which involve using an activator tool. It’s plugged into a wall and delivers an impulse force to the targeted area. The Blair Upper Cervical Technique is a system of analyzing the spinal column’s upper vertebrae. When these vertebrae misalign they can interfere with messages sent to the brain.
The Cox Flexion-Distraction involves applying a gentle stretch to the lower spine through a series of rapid movements. The Directional Non-Force Technique is a method that uses a body challenge and leg check to find subluxations, which are interferences to the nervous system due to a misalignment or abnormal motion of vertebrae.
Diversified adjustment involves a high velocity, low amplitude thrust. The Thompson Drop-Table Technique uses a table with cushions that drop an inch or two when a thrust is delivered to your spine. The Toggle Recoil Technique uses a sudden shallow thrust followed by a quick recoil of the doctor’s hand.
Sometimes manipulation is done under anesthesia in order to break up fibers adhesions and scar tissue around the spine and surrounding tissue.
