Non Surgical Chiropractic Care to Relieve Your Back Pain
If you have back pain, you’re looking for relief but you also want to make sure the treatment for your pain doesn’t cause harm either. That’s why surgery is not considered to be the best first option for pain management. Back pain can recur after surgery, and a trip to the operating table is often more expensive than other forms of treatment. Health care providers are recommending looking for non-surgical alternatives for back pain and more and more, those treatment options include chiropractic care.
At Total Chiropractic Care and Wellness, we’re all about looking for alternatives to back pain management that doesn’t resort to surgery. We do acknowledge that sometimes, surgery is necessary. In fact, our doctor, Dr.Todd Goldman once had back surgery himself. But we know that there are many ways that you can treat back pain without surgery and we want to give you some information on non-surgical alternatives to back pain.
Why Medication is No Longer the Top Alternative to Surgery
Before we go into suggested alternatives to surgery, we should note that one non-surgical alternative is no longer the first line of defense in fighting back pain. That alternative is medication. That’s because the American College of Physicians released new guidelines in February 2017 suggesting patients seek non-drug treatment such as chiropractic care for back pain. For patients who don’t respond to non-drug treatment, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are then suggested. Observers have said the guidelines may have come in response to America’s opioid epidemic.
Chiropractic Techniques and Spinal Decompression
There are several ways chiropractic techniques can present a non-surgical option. Dr. Goldman is an expert in performing chiropractic adjustments known as subluxations. He will do a thorough examination on all new patients to determine a course of action. Very often this will involve pinpointing vertebrae that need correction.
Dr. Goldman will then use several hands-on techniques to work the problematic vertebrae into proper position. Chiropractic techniques can also help release pinched nerves around the back and neck. Chiropractic care can increase the blood flow around areas that are sources of pain and help enable your brain to send messages to injured areas of the body allowing it to heal.
Another treatment technique is spinal decompression. Spinal decompression is a modernized version of traction therapy. Patients undergoing spinal decompression treatment are strapped onto a table that is controlled by a computer program. The table moves allowing Dr. Goldman to create negative pressure along areas of your spine creating a vacuum effect inside the discs of your spine. This allows blood to circulate better and allows nutrients to have easier access to injured areas of your spine.
We also stress all-around wellness for our patients and that includes creating diet and exercise programs to get you in better shape and take pressure off your back. We’ll also give you lifestyle advice in order to be the healthiest person you can be.
