What are the Benefits of Stretching?
Stretching has multiple benefits for your muscles and your joints.
- Enhanced Blood Circulation: Increases blood flow to muscles, improving their function and efficiency.
- Increased Flexibility: Increases range of motion in your joints, enhancing flexibility and decreasing the risk of injury.
- Improved Performance: Stretching can enhance your athletic performance and ability to engage safely in daily activities.
- Balance Assistance: For those with balance issues, stretching to keep muscles strong and healthy may help prevent falls.
Why is Stretching Important to Prevent Injury?
When your muscles are too tight, they are unprepared for physical activity, and you may damage them by unintentionally using them too suddenly. These stressed muscles are then unable to properly support your joints, which can lead to joint injury. Proper stretching can prevent this from occurring.
Basic Tips for Safe Stretching:
- Live large: Concentrate on major muscle groups. Stretch your back, neck, shoulders, hips, thighs, and calves first, and move on to smaller muscle groups if you have time.
- Keep it even: Stretch equally on both sides of your body. Being equally flexible on both sides is important, especially if youโve experienced an injury that could lead to โfavoringโ one side over the other.
- Keep it smooth: Stretch with smooth movements and avoid bouncing. This can be counterproductive and cause tightness or injury.
- Donโt go too far: Stretch until you feel tension and hold for 30-60 seconds. If you experience pain, youโve stretched too far. Tension, yes; pain, no.
- Keep it up: The benefits of stretching come from consistency and may be lost if you donโt continue. Stretch for a minimum of 5-10 minutes at least 2 or 3 times per week.
Does Stretching Prevent Joint Injury?
Stretching alone wonโt prevent joint injuries, but it can help to decrease your risk by improving overall joint and muscle function. When creating your stretching regimen, be aware that overstretching can cause an injury or aggravate existing injuries. Anyone with a connective tissue disorder or an existing injury should take great care to avoid overstretching. We can work with you to find the best stretching techniques and create a chiropractic exercise regimen to maximize your flexibility without doing further harm.
