Most Common Back Injuries

December 8, 2017 by Todd Goldman

Doctor pointing to a spot where a common spinal injury occursIf you’re suffering from back pain, you’re not alone. According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), experts estimate that as many as 80 percent of the population will experience a back problem at some point in their lives. Back pain is also one of the most common reasons people miss work and it’s the second most common reason that people go to a doctor’s office. Back pain certainly keeps us busy at Total Chiropractic Care and Wellness. We treat all forms of back pain and we know that there’s a lot of different types of back pain out there.

Total Chiropractic Will Help You Manage Your Back Pain

At Total Chiropractic, we treat each patient individually and we will design an individual plan to manage your back pain. One of the reasons it’s so important to treat everyone individually is because there are many different types of back injuries out there. We want to talk about some of the most common back injuries out there and how Total Chiropractic will treat these cases.

Some Back Injury Categories

According to the US National Library of Medicine some common back injuries include:

  • Sprains and strains, sometimes related to sports or work injuries
  • Herniated disks
  • Fractured vertebrae

Some other common conditions treated by chiropractors include whiplash, which according to Spine Universe, occurs often when motor vehicles are involved in an accident and one of the vehicles is rear-ended; sciatica, which is pressure on the nerves often caused by a herniated disc; and spinal stenosis which is a narrowing of the bone channel occupied by the spinal nerves and is often a degenerative condition.

Chiropractic Treatment for Back Injuries

Very often when patients come to Total Chiropractic Care and Wellness for treatment, they receive chiropractic manipulation. This method is also used to treat other conditions from neck and shoulder pain to headaches. It involves moving and massaging joints. According to ACA, spinal manipulation is an effective treatment because it reduces the need for other methods of care because manipulation is a conservative treatment that avoids drug prescriptions and surgery. Chiropractic care is also often combined with components like diet and exercise to create a full pain management plan.

Another type of treatment you might encounter at Total Chiropractic Care and Wellness is spinal decompression. This involves patients being strapped to a decompression table which is controlled by a computer. The system creates negative pressure along certain areas of the spine, applying pressure and then cycling to a relaxation phase. The negative pressure creates a vacuum along the discs of the spine, which in turn pulls spinal matter from herniated discs back into place. The result is that blood and nutrients are circulated more easily, allowing for the reduction of inflammation and better pain relief.

Total Chiropractic Can Help with All Types of Back Injuries

At Total Chiropractic Care and Wellness, we know how difficult dealing with back pain can be. We also know that treatment plans that involve too much medication or surgery can do more harm than good. If you do need medication or an operation, we’ll tell you, but for a large number of our patients, we offer healthy, non-invasive pain management. To learn more, contact us today.
