Attempting to mitigate its symptoms using chiropractic manipulation sits firmly in the realm of what is called chiropractic neurology, a discipline that is focused on diagnosing and treating disorders that affect the nervous system.
Is Chiropractic Effective for ADHD?
A 2010 study The chiropractic care of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a retrospective case series, did demonstrate “a correlation between chiropractic manipulation and improvement in ADHD symptoms”. The need for further research was noted. In the meantime, the prospects look good for proving a correlation.
Do Chiropractic Adjustments Help with ADHD?
While chiropractic treatment offers no direct medical aid to ADHD symptoms, it can reduce tension and rectify imbalances in the spine. Treatment can help to improve the brain to body connection that might be impeded.
This is commonly achieved by adjusting the vertebral subluxation of the upper cervical spine in order to optimize the function of the nervous system and brain stem. Subluxation and ADHD symptom remediation are frequently associated with each other for that reason.
Does Chiropractic Care Help ADHD in Kids?
One 2012 study suggests the possibility that chiropractic care could be a useful aid for ADHD. A child with ADHD – and associated focus and behavior issues – was given regular chiropractic treatments over the course of a year.
The methodologies used included spinal manipulative therapy, soft tissue therapy, and stretching. At the end of that period there were noted subjective improvements… including improved ability to follow instructions, reduced episodes of bad behavior, and an overall upgrade in performance at school. While more studies need to be made, it does suggest a possibly effective approach.
