Subluxations are misalignments of the joints where the bones remain in contact with each other but are partially dislocated. Subluxations differ from full dislocations in that a dislocated joint is completely separated, while a subluxation is not. This doesnโt mean a subluxation canโt be incredibly painful and debilitating. It can cause a great deal of discomfort and limit physical activity. Subluxations happen most often in the spine, the hips, the shoulders, and the knees, but they can occur in any joint in the body.
Subluxation Causes and Symptoms
Common Causes of Subluxations:
- Accidents
- Sports injuries.
- Repetitive motion or overuse.
- Poor posture.
- Obesity.
- Weak or tight muscles.
Subluxations also occur as a secondary result of injuries that disrupt a jointโs function, like broken bones, ligament damage, and labral tears.
Symptoms of Subluxations:
- Pain.
- Stiffness.
- Weakness.
- Popping or clicking sounds.
- Reduced range of motion.
- Neurological issues. (โpins and needlesโ feeling)
- Swelling around the joint.
Will a Subluxation Go Away on Its Own?
A minor subluxation in an otherwise healthy person may resolve on its own. Most of us have experienced the sensation of something being slightly out of place and then suddenly it will โpopโ and shift back to normal while moving or stretching. A more significant subluxation, however, may require intervention for it to heal properly.
How Long Does a Subluxation Take to Heal?
Small subluxations often resolve within several weeks. Larger ones may take months to heal, or even longer if left untreated. Healing times also vary based on your overall health, the location of the subluxation, whether you have experienced previous subluxations in the area, and whether other injuries are present.
What Happens If You Donโt Treat a Subluxation?
A minor subluxation that resolves on its own may have no lasting consequences, provided it doesnโt become a recurring issue. More serious or repeated subluxations may cause ongoing problems if left untreated. You may experience muscle spasms, nerve irritation, and joint damage. These issues can lead to discomfort, pain, decreased range of motion, and a diminished quality of life.
