Guidelines for Choosing a Chiropractor… Some Basic Do’s and Don’ts
Chiropractic, like all health care, has good and bad doctors. Chiropractic is a young profession, and bad reputations spread faster than good ones. Whom should you trust? How do you go about screening and selecting a chiropractic professional? What should you consider before entrusting your well-being, your spinal alignment to a practitioner? Here are some basic guidelines to follow when choosing a chiropractor, some key pluses to look for, some key red flags to avoid.
- DO place your trust in referrals. This is generally the best way to screen any medical professional and certainly also true of chiropractors. Good doctors make happy patients. Happy patients are glad to speak well of those who free them from pain and make them healthier
- DO inquire about a wait list. Wait lists are a good sign. They mean that so many people are waiting to see him or her that the chiropractor is not wanting for business. It also means, most likely, that patients’ health is the chiropractor’s key concern. Wait for these doctors. They’re a valuable find and worth it.
- DO look for passion. All good professionals radiate what they believe. If a chiropractor believes in what he/she does, you’ll be able to discern it. If you’re dealing with someone who is basically a businessperson, you’ll be able to discern that as well.
- DO ask about extremities. Most patients will not ask about extremity treatment, but don’t be your average patient. Your ideal chiropractor must be able to adjust extremities, simply because most injuries originate from the wrists, or ankles or shoulders or knees. If you’re looking for a crack chiropractor, make sure he/she is a competent adjuster of extremities.
- DO NOT trust your well-being to “assembly-line” chiropractors, practitioners who spend five minutes or less on a patient. They basically give the same care to every patient, without careful attention to individual needs. Usually, they have a large staff, and, with many other doctors in the office, they have their business down to a fast routine.
- DO NOT fall for scare tactics. Don’t trust someone who claims you may die without proper chiropractic care. You may be in pain, you may suffer, but you won’t die. There are various degrees of chiropractic severity, but, in general, you should go to a chiropractor to feel better and be healthier, not because you’re afraid you’ll die if you don’t.
