The holiday season is upon us again. It’s a wonderful time of year filled with good tidings and joyful get-togethers, often in contrast to the cold, turbulent weather.
In fact, we are more likely to suffer from a slip and fall injury in the winter months. Additionally, preparing your house to host family, decorating, and traveling present further obstacles that can lead to back injury.
We’ll go into detail on some of the most common and preventable ways of sustaining an injury this holiday season below.
Slip and Fall Injuries
While slip and fall injuries do go up in large part due to ice and the increase in slippery surfaces, that’s not the only reason. Lower visibility due to increased dark hours and not taking all the proper precautions when cleaning and decorating the house both play a role.
When going up on a ladder, make sure that the ladder is a quarter of its length away from the surface that it’s up against, and that it’s properly secured. Make sure to check the weather and avoid getting up on a ladder when there’s a chance of wind. It’s much better to decorate the house on a nice day, even if it’s earlier than you’d have liked, than to do it on a less safe day to decorate and put yourself at risk. And whether you’re going up a ladder or walking around your property to decorate, make sure to take your time and wear appropriate footwear that will reduce your risk of slipping.
Seasonal Travel Fatigue
Travel fatigue is another condition that can lead to injury this season. We often don’t factor in recovery time into our holiday travel.
In addition, seasonal travel itself can often cause fatigue and drowsiness on its own. Changing time zones or your sleep schedule during travel can also lead to drowsiness and lack of energy. Without building post-travel recovery time into your holiday plans, you have an expanded risk of injury through slips and falls, lifting, and more. Make sure to get plenty of rest, be mindful of how much sleep you’re getting, and do your best to maintain habits like exercise and a healthy diet while you’re away.
