Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is caused by repeated motion of a body part to excess, especially if the motion is done in a way that causes strain – such as when bad posture is involved. Motions such as bending, reaching, and twisting are usually the root cause. The shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, or hand are a few of those most often subject to these injuries. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, tendinitis, and bursitis are all examples of RSIs.
Some possible ways to get RSIs are:
- Repetitive activities: hairdressing, decorating, ditch digging, typing, or working on an assembly line.
- Sports that involve lots of repetitive movements (such as tennis).
- Poor posture when sitting or standing.
- Using hand-held power tools on a regular basis.
Repetitive tasks do not always cause an RSI – many people perform them for years without harm. It depends upon how the motion is done, how often they take breaks, whether they stretch or warm up first, and the person’s existing level of strength and mobility.
How Do You Heal a Repetitive Stress Injury?
RICE: rest, ice, compression, and elevation for 1 – 2 weeks post-diagnosis. Resting the involved tendons and muscles reduces inflammation, giving the body time to heal, especially if over-the-counter NSAIDs are taken as directed. A doctor may recommend applying ice for 15 minutes three times a day during the first three days after an injury.
Can Chiropractors Help With RSIs?
Yes, chiropractors can help with repetitive stress injury treatments. Methodologies can include a combination of spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and lifestyle advice. Many of these approaches reduce inflammation, allowing more rapid natural healing. If you suffer from a work-related repetitive stress injury, these techniques can help get you back to your normal routine as rapidly as possible.
How Long Does It Take a Stress Injury to Heal?
In the majority of cases (and with proper treatment), patients recover within 3-6 months. In some cases, long-term symptoms can occur with debilitating effect. This assumes that the repetitive motion at the root of the problem is addressed. If not, recovery can take much longer, or even worse, the injury may recur. While RSIs are not necessarily permanent, lack of treatment or delayed treatment can lead to long term disability.
